Opentec has announced its new Combat (Super) Rugged RPT 5-M ultra-mobile tablet PC, which can be carried in one hand or worn strapped to the user’s forearm.
The 5-M has a five-inch WVGA touchscreen delivering 800x480 or 1024x768 pixel resolution, with an Intel 1.6GHz CPU, 2Gb RAM, a solid state drive of up to 128Gb capacity, a hot-swappable battery capable of delivering up to 8 hours in-field use on a single charge, plus SIM, PCIe, SD and USB ports.
The product has an ultra-rugged IP65-rated magnesium alloy chassis.
With a choice of Windows XP or Windows 7 operating systems, as well as optional GPS, WLAN, BT, WWAN (3G), fingerprint scanner and camera, and MIL-STD 461E ultra-low-emission electronics pack (for EW applications), the RPT 5 is only marginally bigger than the current Combat Rugged Opentec RPDA 6 Windows Mobile 6 PDA, and weighs in at 900 grams.
Designed as a multi-purpose soldier-wearable computer+communications platform, it also features a Combat Rugged desktop/vehicle-mount docking station, as well as ports for connection to external GPS and WWAN antennae.
Options under development for release in 2011 include a multi-modal (finger+face+iris) biometrics module, an encrypted WiFi module and tactical radio interface.
The unit has already been trialled and confirmed to support all defence communications requirements, including FIPS 140 and Type 1 encryption and Suite A & B protocols.
